Monica Stevenson’s fine art draws from her knowledge of the rich history of the equestrian tradition as well as her ability to apply this to contemporary art. Monica Stevenson equine photography is a celebration of the horse and the equestrian life.
Featuring horses and all things equestrian, Stevenson’s work is a graceful compilation of her passions, creating collections that leave lasting impressions of well researched and carefully crafted photographs.
The equine form viewed in its entirety is a majestic and powerful thing. Viewed in parts our eye is drawn to the sensuality of curve and line.
Many of my photographs call upon the viewer to “see” in a new and interesting way. Some of these photographs pay homage to characteristics that in and of themselves are things of beauty and wonder.

ACTION IN THE MOMENT
To appreciate photography is to worship its ability to capture a single moment in time; literally a freeze frame. A jumper rider warming up before his round–in the up position of his post….The horse at liberty levitating off the ground–before he can bend his back in a thrilling buck…a horse with his head still and the blur of the head shake in the next moment. The ballet between hoof and ground…..the action….in the moment.

BITS and PIECES
This collection is inspired by the specialized tools and tack that equestrians come in to contact with regularly—“tools of the trade”.My aesthetic and eye for detail has led me to create series of pictures that convey the intricacies and meticulous beauty of the items we hold in our hands on a daily basis. Bits, bridles, saddles, martingales, whips, spurs, boots, curb chains, girths, rubber, leather and metal are seen as objects of inherent symmetry and beauty.

HORSE HEADS
A good portrait lets us see a glimpse of the character of the subject. Our horses are individuals even as they exist in a herd. The portraits in this collection are of some of the horses I have met. Let me introduce them to you…

HORSEscapes EXHIBITION
In anticipation of the World Equestrian Games 2018, this collection was recently unveiled at the HORSE:scapes Exhibition in Tryon, NC.
The new work is an exploration of the tactile and uncannily artistic array of visual details that come to light if one looks and “sees” in a particular way. The oft-overlooked dance of water and froth, the chaotic tumble of colliding horses, the convolutions of exercised flesh, and the sculptural experiments with hair and metal –
All these combine to make a collection of photographs thatcelebrates the delightfully sensory nature of the equineworld which we have chosen to inhabit.

SPANISH INFLUENCE
Is it the Latin blood that courses through my veins, or the undeniable passion that Spaniards imprint on all they create? I believe it’s a bit of both…The deep, dark eyes, the windblown tresses, the musical sway of hips to the tango…These sensual details are irresistible and find their way into these photographs.
